About Turkey

Turkey is a country that acts like a bridge between Asia and Europe. About 95% of its surface is located in historical region of Anatolia (Asia Minor) and around 5% on Balkan Peninsula. Turkey is a maritime country and there are three seas that surround its territory – Black Sea in the north, Aegean Sea in the west and Mediterranean Sea in the south. Land area of Turkey is 783562 km², which makes it one of the bigger world countries.

Capital city is Ankara, situated in the heart of Anatolia, but largest city, political and cultural center of Turkey is Istanbul, city that lies on two continents, Asia and Europe, with Bosporus strait in between. Important cities beside these two are Izmir, Bursa, Adana, Gaziantep and Konya. Because of its size, Turkey has very different climates in different areas. Generally, Turkish inland has continental climate, and eastern and southern coasts have Mediterranean climate, with less rainfall to the east. Turkish coast is not so indented in the north and south, but it is on Aegean coast, with top destinations for sailing, like Bodrum.

Catamaran sailing in Turkey

Best destinations for sailing with catamaran are Aegean coast and Sea of Marmara. If you feel adventurous, you can take your catamaran in one of bases in Aegean Sea and then sail through strait of Dardanelles, keeping an eye of course, on heavy traffic there. After you sail safely through the strait, you should have no problems handling Sea of Marmara if you keep to the south. If you sail north you can expect little bit heavier winds, suited for more experienced sailors. On the southern shores of the sea there a lot of charming little ports where you can stop, refresh and resupply. And of course, there is always unforgettable Istanbul.

Catamaran sailing in Turkey

If you want to go sightseeing first and then sail away, there are great marinas in the city on Bosporus. There are at least 4 marinas you can choose to start your journey with catamaran – Marinturk Istanbul City Marina, Kalamış & Fenerbahçe Marina, Ataköy Marina and West Istanbul Marina. Of course, you can enjoy sailing Aegean Sea and there is beautiful Bodrum for you, with great choice of catamarans, or Marmaris on Mediterranean Sea.

Marmaris

One of the best destinations for sailing and diving on the whole Mediterranean, Marmaris, was, in the beginning of 20th century very small and dull fishing village. Settled beneath the place where two mountains meet, this town has experienced a tourist renaissance from the eighties. It has two big marinas and several small ones and it is a popular wintering location for hundreds of cruising boaters. There is an airport nearby (Dalaman Airport), so it is easily accessible, and it has everything good, modern tourist center needs to have. If you want to visit peninsula called ‘an island’ and visit natural and archeological beauty at once, you need to go to Heaven Island and visit Nimara cave, protected area and famous tourist destination.
