Other great places for sailors are in overseas territories, such as Martinique, Réunion, French Polynesia and New Caledonia.

Requirements for bareboat charter

For sailing in France it's best to have a skipper license, International Certificate of Competence (ICC) is recommended, but often you will be able to take the boat and skipper it if you can show experience and competence. Of course, any valid documentation of previous charters you may have will be helpful. Of course, it is best not to rely only on the fact that you can skipper a boat. The best thing to do is to obtain an ICC and then you’ll have no trouble in taking a bareboat charter. No special license is required for operating VHF radio.

French coast

Southern France, also known as le Midi, has two very different types of the coast. There is Atlantic coast in Aquitaine, with restless and sometimes fierce Bay of Biscay. But there are also some unbelievable tourist destinations like Biarritz, with its golden beaches and famous Hôtel du Palais. There are outstanding infrastructure and modern marinas in this big area, and there are safe ports, like La Rochelle. Coast of Normandy and coast of Brittany are great places for sailing, but not so demanding like Bay of Biscay. If you want a lot more sun and something little bit calmer than harsh Atlantic, there is coast of Languedoc – Roussilon. There are two beautiful marinas at the end of Gulf of Lion, Camargue and Canet. Of course, for those who like romantic stories and a dash of luxury, there is Côte d'Azur, from Toulon to Italian border. There are many great places there, just to mention St. Tropez, Nice, Monaco and Villefranche.

Villefranche-sur-Mer

Just few kilometers to the east from Nice you’ll find picturesque little town of Villefranche-sur-Mer with its marina. It is located only 10 km southwest of Monaco, so if you want to drop by to one of Monte Carlo casinos and spin a wheel for a few times, Villefranche is a nice place to start. Villefranche has the deepest natural harbor comparing to all ports in France. Moreover, it is one of the deepest in the Mediterranean. If you want to make splendid photos, you can always anchor in Villefranche bay. From there you can climb up at Mont – Leuze (520 m) above the town and enjoy the view. Marina itself has capacity of 420 berths, with all services one can need. But you can start your journey also from Nice and visit Villefranche on your route.

Le Marin

Le Marin is the capital city of Martinique for sailing. It is beautiful, picturesque town and you can find on the almost very south end of the island, far away from the two volcanoes. When you come to public airport in Fort-de-France, it is recommended that you take rent-a-car to Le Marin. When you come to the town, you’ll see that it has European style in architecture, but mixed with this Caribbean way of life, it gives it beautiful kind of charm. If you come in August, you can see its beautiful carnival and after that rent a boat in a local marina.

Nice

If you want to get to your marina fast and still be able to visit all main tourist attractions in the city, marina of Nice is just the place for you. It is located in the heart of the old town and only 4 km from the airport. Almost completely surrounded by the old town, this marina is one of the most unusual and beautiful ports in France. Great place to start your sailing around Côte d’Azur. If you just feel lazy, you can always get NGV, a high speed ferry. It is the only port in France that has it, and with its services trip to Corsica lasts only from 2.5 to 3 hours. Great thing for day trips to Corsica. But, you know, you can get to the island with your sailboat, it’s the better way.
